Our Philosophy
"The quality of a wine cannot be distinguished from the place of origin of the grapes and from the persons who produce it."
Located in the town of Arbizzano, "Le Ragose" estate is one of a number of winemakers in the region which helped re-establish Valpolicella as a “classic” wine of Italy. The estate is located at the Valpolicella zone’s highest point (1,148 feet), gently overlooking the lush green hills. In 1969, enologists Arnaldo Galli and his wife Marta bought the abandoned 70-acre "Le Ragose" estate, firmly believing in terroir and tradition. They planted their estate-owned vineyards in 1969, launching their now historic winery. They have striven to respect the traditions of this ancient zone while carefully introducing modern technology both in the vineyard and in the cellars. They have been slowly increasing the types of varietals they planted with the precise scope of improving the sector of the "classic" wines and, at the same time, satisfying the evolving and changing tastes of the consumer.
For them a wine was much more than fermented grape juice: it is a result of the land where those grapes are grown and the people who grow them. Recognizing that many excellent vineyard sites had been abandoned in favor of more easily-farmed sites on the plains, they replanted the "Le Ragose" and "Le Sassine" vineyards and began making Amarone and Valpolicella in as natural a way as possible. Today, these 40 acres of vineyard lie above the area's notorious winter fogs. The terrain is particularly suited for vine growing and the climate ideal for the "appassimento" (drying of the grapes)necessary to produce Amarone. The Galli family is involved in all phases of the production from the vineyard to the marketing of the finished wines. Their wines, which have drawn much attention in the press, are produced exclusively by the grapes grown at "Le Ragose" and always with the focus on quality and not on quantity.
